The purpose of the Madison County America 250 committee is to provide celebrations which commemorate the end of the American Revolution, officially separating the American Colonies from Great Britain and the rule of King George III.
Our goal is to be inclusive of all county residents and communities; to create an awareness of all facets of our Nation's history through education, special events, fellowship, and celebrations.
There were multiple events that led to the American Revolution. The Stamp Act of 1765 (tax on printed materials), the Townshend Acts of 1767 ( a tax on goods), the Boston Massacre of 1770 (where three men including Crispus Attacks were killed), and later the Intolerable Acts of 1774 (placed as a punishment for the Boston Tea Party).
The Townshend Acts of 1767 were mostly relieved except for the tax on tea. The British East India Tea Company was then determined to be the prime supplier of tea to the colonies, which continued to be taxed. The colonists banded together to protest these acts placed on the colonies. The most famous retaliation of the colonists was the Boston Tea Party, where the Sons of Liberty dumped over 92,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor. This retaliation brought a swift response from British Parliament in passing the Coercive Acts in 1774, closing Boston Harbor and demanding repayment for the destroyed tea (coincidently many members of Parliament were stockholders in the British East India Tea Company). British troops were sent to Boston to quell the unrest. In addition, to the cost of repayment of the loss of the tea, the colonists were required to pay for the costs of food and housing for the British troops that increased the discontent of the colonists.
